What Could Go Wrong If You Remove Your Car's Dents Yourself?

Posted on: 17 May 2017

A dent in your car is not just a cosmetic issue, it can impact the structural integrity of its body. Therefore, it is important to take care of dents immediately. Some car owners are turning to kits available in auto stores to help fix dents. Although it is possible to use a kit to repair a dent sometimes, there are mistakes that could lead to less than desired results. Here are just a few dent repair mistakes to look out for.

Incorrectly Assessing the Dent

Not all dents are the same. Whereas some of them can be repaired at home in your garage or by an auto mechanic, some are so severe that they cannot be repaired. In those instances, the affected portion of the car will need to be replaced. Unfortunately, some amateur car owners are not familiar with how to correctly assess a dent and end up with car that is structurally weaker.

If you are unsure whether or not the dent in your car is repairable, have it professionally assessed at an auto body repair shop. The technician can not only help you avoid making the wrong decision about repairing the dent, but can offer invaluable insight on how to do it correctly.

Using the Wrong Tools

Even though dent repair kits are sold as a fix for all types of cars and dents, they are not. The tools that are included in the kit or that you are advised to obtain might not be right for your car. As a result, you could have trouble with achieving the desired effect.

Before starting the repair, take the time to assess the tools that are available and determine which ones are needed. Keep in mind that not all tools are the same. For instance, the hammer needed to help pound out a dent is not the same as the one commonly used in household work. The hammer needs to have a more rounded head to be effective.

Opting for the Paintless Dent Repair

For experienced auto body technicians, a paintless dent repair is relatively easy to do. For an amateur, there could be several problems that result from attempting to do it. Without the expertise needed, you could end up needing a complete paint job anyway.

If you are planning to go forward with repairing the dent yourself and do not have experience with the paintless dent repair method, consider using a different method. If the repair is not completed correctly, you will have to spend money to correct the created problem.
